Rubbish as records

One of the papers at the Place and Displacement conference I attended the other week was by Dr Stefan Schutt. This paper discussed his ‘Signs of the Times’ project, started as a result of finding the 1940s and 1950s records from a signwriting company.

Schutt has been putting together a digital archive of the job descriptions and also signs that remain around Melbourne. The old signs painted on walls are sometimes called ‘ghost signs’.

That Schutt’s project started from rescuing papers that had been discarded reminded me of many of the quite beautiful documents that were rescued from a skip post council amalgamation and are now in the Port Melbourne Historical and Preservation Society collection.
