Why Port Melbourne?

Port Melbourne is an interesting place. It has often been a testing ground for policies and programs such as avoiding slum development, the garden city movement of planned development, and public housing in Victoria. Many people have already written about Port Melbourne, which means there is a wide variety of published information available to help place the information gathered in this project in a wider context.

While there is research into other areas that have undergone gentrification, Port Melbourne is different in that a significant amount of previously industrial land was developed for housing in the 1990s. As a result there has been a rapid influx of newcomers on a large scale, which did not necessarily displace existing residents but has resulted in demographic changes in the suburb.
